Welcome to your August

Be Well, Be Joyful Newsletter

From the Haven of a Hammock

Happy August, friends!

After all the celebrations of summer, don’t you agree that we’ve finally reached the perfect month for heading straight for a hammock? Now, there’s something to celebrate: giving yourself permission to slip into what I call “receiving mode”—that mental shift that allows you to lay back, breathe, and be cool with just coasting a little and seeing what happens. This month’s newsletter asks you to remember the last time you were in receiving mode, and also includes an invitation to help you find it.

Have you ever noticed that when you’re peaceful, and completely engrossed in what’s before you—focused and curious, in receiving mode—your mind magically becomes free of its ritual of categorizing, judging, and (rather loudly) commenting on everything? This mental reprieve can be found whenever we slow down enough to ditch our distractions and seek inquiry beyond ourselves.  It can happen when we follow the melody of birdsong in our backyard and focus on seeking its source; when we sit with a setting sun, pray to “let go, and let God”, or claim a succulent waft of lilac as our own. But the best part of switching gears is the conscious agreement we make with ourselvesto not direct the process—to simply drop back, observe, and to remain open to what’s coming next.

Kids can play for endless hours in this space of no limits—where imagination, creativity, and joy abound. Children are effortlessly synched with their spiritual selves: that part of us that is ageless, resilient, innovative, and open to transcendence. Mindfulness is our true nature: it’s who were were then, and who we still are, as we learn to surrender our mental chatter. I know the concept sounds foreign—but when we think of our minds as containers for thought, and our brains as the instruments through which the mind flows, it becomes clear that whatever we’re feeding our brains determines where our minds will go. We nurture these miraculous receiving stations, and we rely so much on their transmissions—until one day we find that it’s next to impossible to turn them off! Good news: we can return to this pure, childlike spirituality whenever we tune into receiving mode.

Let’s practice being mindful now: Think of a time in which you found yourself open and in the moment; relaxed, and content to stay right there. See if you can bring yourself to the place you were, and remember what was happening that allowed you to surrender there. You probably weren’t talking or texting as you were swept and carried away from the tumble-dryer of thoughts in your head.  For me, it was an evening with Doris and Rock on Turner Classic Movies—although 90 minutes of Pillow Talk isn’t the only way to find freedom from mental jabber. Mental emancipation often comes without a channel guide, and it can stay for just a flash—before our bossy mind tells us to knock it off! Wouldn’t it be nice to be able say, “Back off, dude—can’t you see I’m coasting here?” In fact, mindfulness teaches us how.

For now, let’s return to that experience. Think of the second your thoughts barged in—telling you to get back to the work of analyzing, classifying, and deciding what and where to focus your attention next. When you pivoted from that earlier place—receiving mode, the state of resting attention—did you feel that your energy had shifted? If your mind didn’t beat you up too badly for playing hooky, did you somehow feel replenished—or maybe even more focused and alert? If so, you experienced the power of mindfulness: nurturing your spiritual self.

Developing our spiritual selves is a daily practice that includes rituals for nurturing our deep inner being. Meditation is one such tool that teaches us to free our minds of limiting thoughts and patterns, to rewire our brains to bring more peace, pleasure, and meaning from the depth of our souls. Each time we tune into receiving mode we make space for piercing the membrane of ego that we so often identify as self. One day, our practice hopefully leads us to the discovery that we are not our minds. We’re much more than that: we are our souls.

And since our soul journeys are never just about ourselves, I invite you to join us here at Equilibrium for a Meditation Workshop to share the path—and to build a daily spiritual practice with tools you can take home. If you can’t be here, I’m excited to offer access to the workshop by sending you a link to our private livestream broadcast.

Until then, may your hammock be a haven for peace,

Cynthia
